Endless Sunday

Dear D,
Went surfing and ENJOYED it!!!

Watching warily for a kahuna..

Mad adrenaline! Even from a 1 foot wave.

I like this one because it looks like I'm doing something Xtreme.

A beautiful day down at Memories Bar, Pakarang Cape.

Catching a wave with A!

Wipe out..

Resurrection!

I need an underwater camera like A and N's..

Here is A pushing C onto a wave ~~~~

Left--me, right--N.

Tuesday

Dear D,
Your tenant name is by far the most pronounceable one on that list. Congratulations on the apartment!
I've had a strange day so far. I had a dream in the morning that my throat was closing and I couldn't breathe. The panic woke me up and I found both of my arms on my face. I'm really not sure how that happened.
After one, teasing day of sunshine the gloom and mist are back to make my mornings impossible to get up in (unless my arms are trying to asphyxiate me) and churn the ocean into a brown soup. I've been reading Wave of Destruction by Erich Krauss to learn more about how the tsunami affected my surroundings, but it's making it hard for me to sleep at night when I can hear the waves crashing on the beach a few hundred yards from my bed.
Speaking of tsunamis, Hollywood is filming another disaster movie, The Impossible, about the 2004 tsunami in this area. The indoor set is 5 minutes down the street from me and it's dangerous because a) all their trucks, buses and trailers block one whole lane and b) I nearly drive off the road craning my head around trying to get a glimpse of Ewan McGregor or Naomi Watts. Still no sighting. Some girls I know have been cast as extras, which means getting covered in fake mud and fake blood and acting injured (sleeping) in crowded hospital corridors.
It's pretty interesting.
...ack, I have so many photos to upload!

L

Asia vs. America: Shopping

Dear L,

Now that I've shopped in Asia, I have some serious generalizing to do.

Shopping in Asia
The people and merchandise behind the Asian shopping mall setup are like a team of ants trying to fill out a warehouse.  It requires a lot of coordination and many, many bodies.  Bangkok had far and away the biggest malls I have ever seen in my life but the merchandise was tiny!  The Asian shopping ideal seems to be as much distraction and chaos as possible buying even a replacement charger for one's mobile phone or 50 cents' worth of potato chips (in a miniature bag, of course).

Shopping in the USA
It's different in America.  In America, the shopping ideal is finding a metaphorical long-lost treasure on a metaphorical island in uncharted waters known only to the metaphorical natives.  American shoppers flock to "hidden locations" like Shake Shack (the best burger on Manhattan, a tiny little shack staffed by four people in the middle of a park with a line literally hours long).  But when the American shopper gets to that tiny little coffee shoppe on the beach, she wants a whole goddamn liter of coffee.

I did some shopping of my own today, which, as is customary here in Sweden, meant going to IKEA.  So I finally have a cutting board! (the same one the other 10 million residents of Sweden have)  I celebrated by cutting the heck out of some garlic and chile anaheim en route to spaghetti aglio, olio, and peperoncino.  Meeting some friends to go hiking at 8:45 tomorrow morning so it'll be an early night!

Hershey's Bar and Beer o'clock

Dear D,

The dead gecko class is at it again! I just left class early due to one boy's migraine-inducing shrieks and general, complete chaos.

So now I'm going to get comfy in my bungalow: shower, drink a beer, eat some chocolate and watch a movie.

Now I know why adults don't look askance at an entire restaurant chain named Thank God Its Friday.

Oh yeah, I apologize to you and the readers of this blog for not posting photos like I usually do. The main reason is that I need to get a group of 15 students performance ready in 6 days for a salsa choreography.
...maybe I'll have two beers.

Wearily,
L

Dear L,

-Chinese proverb

I'm so happy I could share in your Thailand experience.
